New Patient Consultations — Adults With an Established ADHD Diagnosis
We offer two distinct consultation pathways depending on who made the original diagnosis and whether treatment has already been commenced.
Pathway 1: Specialist-Diagnosed & Treated ADHD (Psychiatrist / Paediatrician): 40-minute consultation
Eligibility
You must provide one of the following:
A letter from a psychiatrist or paediatrician confirming:
ADHD diagnosis
Current or previous treatment plan
Medication history
This pathway is for patients already diagnosed and medically managed by a specialist who are seeking ongoing GP-led care.
During this appointment, we will:
Review specialist diagnosis and correspondence
Assess current symptom control and daily functioning
Review medication effectiveness, tolerability, and safety
Screen for side effects, sleep issues, cardiovascular risk, substance use, and mental health changes
Discuss continuation or adjustment of treatment only if clinically indicated
Establish an appropriate monitoring and review plan
This appointment does not include ADHD diagnosis or re-diagnosis.
Pathway 2: Psychologist Diagnostic Report (No Prior Medical Diagnosis): Initial 40-minute consultation + 20-minute follow-up
Eligibility
You must provide:
A full ADHD diagnostic report from a registered clinical psychologist
Summary letters are not sufficient
This pathway applies when ADHD has been psychologically diagnosed but not yet medically formalised.
Important to understand upfront
A psychologist’s report supports a diagnosis — it does not establish a medical diagnosis.
Medication cannot be commenced at the initial appointment for this pathway.
Initial appointment (40 minutes): Diagnostic confirmation
This visit is focused on medical confirmation, not treatment.
We will:
Review the full psychological diagnostic report in detail
Conduct a structured medical assessment to confirm ADHD in a medical context
Assess differential diagnoses and comorbidities
Review cardiovascular, psychiatric, and substance-use risk
Determine whether the diagnosis can be medically formalised
Follow-up appointment
Occurs after medical assessment and any required investigations
Treatment options are discussed only if the diagnosis is medically confirmed and it is clinically safe to proceed

Overview:
This 10-minute appointment is designed as an initial consultation to gather the patient’s history and concerns regarding ADHD, as part of a shared care approach between the GP and psychiatrist. It is not a diagnostic assessment, but rather a step to ensure that the patient's needs are understood and that the referral for further evaluation is appropriate.Key Components:
Patient History & Concerns: The psychiatrist will take a history, focusing on the patient's symptoms, challenges, and concerns related to ADHD. This will include any relevant medical, psychological, or behavioral information.
Shared Care Explanation: The patient will be informed about the collaborative care model, where the GP and psychiatrist will work together in managing the patient’s treatment plan.
Next Steps: Based on the discussion, referral will be sent for diagnostic assessment and outline the next steps for treatment or further referral.
Duration: 10 minutes
Objective:
To gather relevant information for a referral to the psychiatrist and establish a plan for ADHD assessment under a shared care model.
